1. PROPERTIES:
Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent structurally related to nalidixic acid with a wider antibacterial spectrum and greater activity.
2. INDICATIONS:
Urinary tract infections, gastro-intestinal infections (diarrhoea and shigellosis), gonorrhoea, peritonitis.
3. CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Hypersensitivity to Norfloxacin or history of hypersensitivity to other quinolones.
- URIFLOX should not be used in children or pregnant women or nursing mothers.
4. PRECAUTIONS:
- URIFLOX should be used with caution and doses may need to be reduced in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment, glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, epilepsy or a history of CNS disorders.
- URIFLOX should be used with caution in adolescents.
- Sun light should be avoided.
5. SIDE EFFECTS:
It may cause Gastro-intestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea), headache, dizziness, discomfort, skin rash, photosensitivity, tremor, confusion, disturbances in liver function, increases in blood urea or creatinine, and rarely renal failure.
6. DRUG INTERACTIONS:
- Theophylline: Concurrent administration may lead to elevated plasma concentrations of theophylline.
- Antiacids containing magnesium or aluminium hydroxide may decreases the absorption of norfloxacin.
- Probenecid increases the level of norfloxacin in the plasma.
- After chemotherapy there is decrease in the absorption of norfloxacin.
- Warfarin: Concurrent administration may lead to elevate the effect of anticoagulant.
7. DOSAGE & ADMINSTRATION:
Usual dosage: One tablet (400 mg) every 12 hours or as directed by the physician.
Gonorrhoea: Two tablets (800 mg) in a single dose.
- Good quantities of water should be taken.
- Treatment should be continued for not less than 7 days, and in case of severe urinary infections, treatment may need to be continued up to 12 weeks or as directed by the physician.
8. PACKAGING & COMPOSITION :
URIFLOX - Tablets: A pack of 20 tablets. Each tablet contains Norfloxacin 400 mg.
9. STORAGE CONDITIONS:
Store URIFLOX - Tablets at temperature between (15-30)°C.
