1. PHARMACOLOGY:
Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis at the level of the bacterial ribosome. The antibiotic binds preferentially to the 50S ribosomal subunit and affects the process of peptide chain initiation.
Clindamycin in vitro inhibits all Propionibacterium acnes cultures tested (MICs 0.4 mcg/ml).
2. PHARMACOKINETICS:
Although clindamycin phosphate is inactive in vitro, rapid in vivo (on the skin) hydrolysis converts this compound to the antibacterially active clindamycin.
Following multiple topical applications of clindamycin phosphate at a concentration equivalent to 10 mg clindamycin per gr, very low levels of clindamycin are present in the serum (0.3ng/ml) and less than 0.2% of the dose is recovered in urine as clindamycin.
3. INDICATIONS:
CLINDO topical gel is indicated in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
4. CONTRAINDICATIONS:
CLINDO topical gel is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. CLINDO topical gel is contraindicated in individuals with a history of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or a history of “antibiotic-associated” colitis.
