1.PHARMACOLOGY:
GLYCON is an oral blood glucose lowering drug of the sulfonylurea class. The secretion of insulin by functioning islet beta cells is increased. It is readily absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. Its duration of action is 12 hours or more. It also decreases the progress of the diabetic retinopathy and diabetic kidney.
2.INDICATIONS:
Diabetes mellitus non insulino-dependent.
3.CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Ketoacidosis.
- Juvenile diabetes.
- Severe infection.
- Severe impairment of renal or hepatic function.
- Pregnancy.
4.SIDE EFFECTS:
GLYCON may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, leucopenia, hypoglycaemia.
5.PRECAUTIONS:
Should be given with care in the following cases:
- Breast feeding.
- Physical activities because of the hazard of hypoglycaemia.
6.DRUG INTERACTIONS:
These following drugs decrease the hypoglycaemic effects of GLYCON :
- Rifampicin.
- Thiazide diuretics.
- Corticosteroids.
- Oral contraceptives.
These following drugs increase the hypoglycaemic effects of GLYCON
- Sulphonamides.
- Chloramphenicol.
- Salicylates.
- Cimetidine.
- Miconazole.
7.DOSAGE & ADMINSTRATION:
- It should be taken 30 minutes before or with the meal.
- Initially : ½ - 1 tablet (40 - 80 mg) daily as a single dose. Adjusted according to response up to (320 mg) daily.
- Doses higher than (160 mg) should be taken as divided doses.
8.PACKAGING & COMPOSITION:
GLYCON - Tablets: A pack of 20 tablets. Each tablet contains Gliclazide 80 mg.
9. STORAGE CONDITIONS:
Store GLYCON – Tablets at temperature below 25°C, in a dry place.
