2-CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Glucose and Sodium Chloride Injection solutions are contraindicated in renal insufficiency, edema and patients with hepatic or renal disease etc.
Glucose and Sodium Chloride Injection solutions are contraindicated in renal insufficiency, edema and patients with hepatic or renal disease etc.
3-SIDE EFFECTS:
-Administration of large doses may give rise to sodium accumulation, edema and hyperchloraemic acidoses.
-Glucose injections especially if hypertonic may have low pH and may cause venous irritation and thrombophlebitis.
4-OVERDOSAGE:
Excessive administration may give rise to hypervolemic haemodilution, sodium accumulation and hypernatremia with resultant dehydration of organs particularly the brain, and edema and hypokalaemia. Hyperglycemia may occur. Elyctrolyte disturbances may need treatment.
Overdosage should be treated with diuretics (treatment depends on the age of the patient administer of a hypertonic solution (e.g 20% mannitol in water), and control cardiac parameters(central venous pressure, pulse,EEG)
5-WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS:
- Glucose tolerance may be impaired in patients with renal failure or diabetes mellitus. If administered to diabetic or patients with renal insufficiency for appropriate clinical reasons they should be monitored very closely. The need for electrolyte should be kept in mind.

-Should be discontinued if adverse reactions occur.
-Subcutaneous injection of sodium free glucose solutions may cause peripheral circulatory collapse due to diffusion of sodium and water into site of injection.
-During glucose infusion, deposition of glycogen tends to lower the serum potassium concentration, therefore in fasting patients with good renal function who are on parenteral therapy sufficient potassium should be added in concentrated glucose solutions.
-Vitamin free glucose solutions may cause deficiency of B group vitamins which should be corrected simultaneously.
6-DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Do not add certain medicaments to the injection with which it is incompatible e.g Warfarine, VitB12, sodium bicarbonate, kanamycin sulfate and novobiocin sodium.
7-PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Intravenous glucose infusion to the mother may result in fetal insulin production and risk of rebound hypoglycemia in the neonate. Infusion of glucose administered during caesarian section and labor should not exceed 5-10g glucose per hour.

8-DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
The solution is for administration by intravenous infusion. The dosage is dependent upon the age, weight and clinical condition of the patient.
